Understanding Systems of Power (and How We Shift Them)

In a time of growing uncertainty and polarization, understanding how power operates is essential for anyone working to create meaningful change. This interactive session will explore how systems of power function, how they shape our communities and institutions, and what history can teach us about responding to periods of democratic strain. Through the lens of philanthropy, civic engagement, and community leadership, participants will examine the role of constructive and disruptive action, identify pathways for collective impact, and explore how finding a community of action can strengthen both individual and organizational effectiveness.
Participants will:
- Explore how the current moment fits within broader historical patterns of democratic change and authoritarianism.
- Understand how power operates and the key "pillars" that sustain systems and institutions.
- Examine the role of philanthropy, nonprofits, and community organizations in advancing change.
- Learn about constructive and disruptive approaches to civic action and resistance.
- Reflect on opportunities to deepen engagement, build community, and take collective action.

Morgan Benson is a community organizer, activist, and nonprofit leader committed to building more equitable, connected communities. She is passionate about creating opportunities for people to learn, connect, and take collective action on the issues that matter most. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of Chicago Women in Philanthropy (CWIP), where she co-chairs the Communications Committee and serves on the Racial Equity and Social Justice Committee.

Cate is passionate about connecting people to shared purpose and empowering community members to create lasting impact.

If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. Many of our events sell out, and we want to make the spot available to someone else.
- Full Refund: Cancellations made 5 or more days before the event are eligible for a full refund.
- No Refund: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations made within 5 days of the event.
- Ticket Transfers: You may transfer your ticket to another individual at any time prior to the event. To do so, please contact us with the name and email of the new attendee.
